AI red teaming FAQ

15 questions buyers ask before choosing an AI red teaming vendor, answered only from public sources, each linked. Where no source answered a question, the answer says so.

How much does AI red teaming cost?

Most vendors are quote-based. Published figures found: Enkrypt AI lists Explore $0, Launch $149/mo ($134 billed annually), Scale $1,499/mo ($1,349 billed annually) and Enterprise custom. Promptfoo has a free Community tier with up to 10k red-team probes a month. SPLX has a free plan and quote-based paid plans. Giskard offers a free open-source library and an Enterprise tier by quote. The open-source tools are free. No managed-service or crowdsourced vendor checked publishes a price. See the cost page.

What is the difference between AI red teaming and penetration testing?

Microsoft notes that "red teaming" historically meant systematic adversarial attacks for testing security vulnerabilities, and that with LLMs the term "extended beyond traditional cybersecurity" to cover probing for harmful outputs. Bishop Fox separates AI pen testing (technical exploitability) from AI red teaming (manipulating the system into unsafe behaviour) and recommends both. See the full comparison.

How often should you red team an LLM application?

No standard sets a fixed cadence. Microsoft recommends testing iteratively, with and without mitigations, before and after they are in place. Microsoft's AI Red Team writes that "The work of securing AI systems will never be complete" (arXiv 2501.07238). Several platforms sell continuous or CI/CD-triggered testing, for example Straiker and Noma Security.

How long does an AI red teaming engagement take?

Published timelines: HackerOne runs 15- or 30-day engagements that launch in about a week. Mindgard's managed service typically takes 4-6 weeks per application. Bugcrowd's AI Pen Test can start within 72 hours.

Is AI red teaming legally required?

In the EU, it is required for providers of general-purpose AI models with systemic risk. Article 55 of the EU AI Act requires "conducting and documenting adversarial testing", applicable from 2025-08-02. In the US, no source opened for this research shows a binding federal mandate for private companies; NIST AI 600-1 is voluntary guidance. See EU AI Act and red teaming.

Can automated tools replace human red teamers?

Microsoft's AI Red Team lists "Automation can help cover more of the risk landscape" and "The human element of AI red teaming is crucial" as separate lessons (arXiv 2501.07238). Microsoft also recommends an initial round of manual red teaming before systematic measurement. In this comparison, vendors marked "Both" combine a platform with expert-led work.

Is red teaming the same as running safety benchmarks?

No. Microsoft lists "AI red teaming is not safety benchmarking" as a lesson (arXiv 2501.07238). Its guidance also says red teaming is "not a replacement for systematic measurement" (Microsoft Learn).

Which frameworks should red-team findings map to?

The common set is the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications (2025), the OWASP Top 10 for Agentic Applications (2026) for agents, MITRE ATLAS, NIST AI 600-1, and the EU AI Act where relevant. The comparison table shows which vendors claim which mappings.

Should the red team be independent of the developers?

NIST AI 600-1 action MS-1.3-003 says to verify that people running structured human feedback exercises "are not directly involved in system development tasks for the same GAI model" (NIST PDF). Microsoft recommends a diverse team with both adversarial and benign-user mindsets.

What should be tested: the model or the application?

Both. Microsoft recommends testing the base model with its safety system (usually through the API), the application (best through the UI), and both again before and after mitigations, on the production UI where possible.

What attacks does AI red teaming cover?

NIST AI 600-1 action MS-2.7-007 lists abuse to attack other systems, prompt injection, adversarial examples, data poisoning, membership inference and model extraction (NIST PDF). The OWASP 2025 list adds system prompt leakage, excessive agency, and vector and embedding weaknesses.

Do I need agent-specific red teaming?

OWASP published a separate Top 10 for Agentic Applications in December 2025. The October 2026 MITRE ATLAS release added autonomous-agent case studies and agent-related mitigations (changelog). Most platforms in the comparison now advertise agent and MCP testing.

Can I start with free open-source tools?

Yes. promptfoo (MIT), garak (Apache-2.0), PyRIT (MIT), DeepTeam (Apache-2.0) and Giskard OSS (Apache-2.0) are free. The commercial tiers mostly add dashboards, SSO, continuous monitoring and compliance reporting (for example promptfoo pricing). See open-source AI red teaming tools.

What should the deliverable include?

Microsoft suggests a regular report listing the top issues, a link to the raw data, the plan for the next round, and acknowledgement of the red teamers. Bugcrowd's AI Pen Test includes a final report and one retest. Pillar Security says its findings include transcripts and reproduction steps.

Crowdsourced, consultancy, or platform?

Crowdsourced: HackerOne, Bugcrowd and Gray Swan Arena. Many testers over a fixed window. Consultancies: Trail of Bits, NCC Group and Bishop Fox. Scoped expert assessments. Platforms: most of the rest. Automated, repeatable runs, often in CI/CD. Both platform and service: Mindgard, Lakera and Adversa AI.
